OK, so this may seem like an up close and personal National Geographic, “EWE!”
However, I think we need to take a closer look.
No, I’m not talking about microscopically examining the remaining anatomy or contents of the little Junco this Hawk just pulverized.
I’m talking about what the Hawk can teach us.
As humans in today’s economical and social structure, we insist on keeping certain stocks of food available for our whimsical consumption. When we run low, we go out to the store and purchase what we want.
The reality, in many cases, is that we have more than sufficient quantities at our disposal. Sadly, it often is actually disposed. We’re just not content with what we have and must have more.
There are cultures “out there” that actually go to the market on a daily basis to get what they need for that day. Note, I said for THAT DAY….not for the next entire week.
If you take a look at the story of the Israelites wandering in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, they griped and complained that they could return to the land of leeks-a-plenty even if it did mean returning to slavery. What was absolutely needed was dropped in their laps from heaven. When they took more than necessary, it rotted and made them sick. (That actually calls for “EWE!”)
This guy only took what he needed. One little bird was sufficient for his meal. He didn’t sit in a tree begging for another bird to bring it to him. He didn’t whine and complain that he didn’t have enough. He simply went and got what he needed for THAT MOMENT.
So instead of thinking this is disgusting and or distasteful, stop and consider the lesson Hawk has for us.
Quit complaining. Don’t worry about tomorrow. Get what you need for NOW. Be grateful for it, enjoy it, and move on. What you need next will be there when you actually need it.
